MEET THE AUTHOR

Gloria S. N. Allen, novelist and storyteller, author of Smoke in the Kitchen.

ALLEN

Gloria Allen is a freelance writer based in Lumberton, New Jersey, whose literary voice is deeply rooted in her Sierra Leonean heritage . Born and raised in Freetown, Sierra Leone, she emigrated to the United States in May 1997, bringing with her a rich legacy of leadership, service, and creative expression.

A member of the International Women’s Writing Guild, Gloria is a novelist, playwright, and poet. Three of her poems were published in the anthology Embracing Our Pasts by The International Library of Poetry . Her passion for writing is matched by her lifelong commitment to education and professional development. While living in Sierra Leone, she founded a secretarial institution dedicated to training young women as administrative professionals and later established the National Association of Secretaries and Administrators in 1995 . She also organized conferences, workshops, and training programs, and self-published two professional guidebooks along with launching The Secretary, the country’s first secretarial magazine .

Her professional journey includes distinguished service with the Sierra Leone Government, working in both the Office of the Presidency and the Office of the Vice President between 1972 and 1976 . She later served as an Executive Assistant for an American mining company, Sierra Rutile, from 1977 to 1995 . A trailblazer in civic leadership, Gloria became the first female President of the Rokel Lions Club in Freetown, where she spearheaded fundraising initiatives for the underprivileged .

Beyond her literary and professional accomplishments, Gloria is deeply engaged in community and diaspora leadership. She currently serves as Chair of the Methodist Girls’ High School Diaspora and has held leadership roles within the Methodist Girls’ High School Alumnae Association and the Krio Descendant Union . She is also a member of Bead Designer International and has chaired its Newsletter Committee membership.

A lifelong learner, Gloria graduated from Clough Secretarial College in Canterbury, Kent, UK, and later pursued studies in meeting management and writing through New York University, The New School, and online programs .

At the heart of her story are family and faith. Gloria is the proud mother of two children and grandmother to four grandchildren . Through her writing, leadership, and service, she continues to bridge continents, generations, and communities, transforming lived experience into stories that endure.
